Edith Falls, which also is known by its Aboriginal name Leilyn, is a series of waterfalls that is really known more as a giant swimming hole than an impressive waterfall. The plunge pool at the base of the lowest falls is very large and they've built plenty of infrastructure for camping, food, toilets, and change rooms all so people can enjoy swimming at the falls. There is also a longer loop trail that allows you to see the upper cascades on the Edith River. However, we didn't do this one our trip. The falls belongs within the boundaries of Nitmiluk National Park. You can get here after driving 19km on a paved spur road leading to the big car park at the end of the road. The turnoff is about 42km north of Katherine on the Stuart Highway (Hwy 1) or some 48km south of Pine Creek on the Stuart Highway. If you're interest is photographing the falls, you might want to come in the afternoon when the west-facing falls receives the sun's soft light. It was completely in shadow in the morning when we were there as you can see in the photos.
