Fitzroy Falls is perhaps the star waterfall attraction of the Kiama District and is the centerpiece of Morton National Park. This was probably one of our favorite (if not the favorite) waterfall of our drought-stricken November 2006 trip. As you can tell from the photos, we had good reason to enjoy this waterfall as it had pretty nice flow (despite the drought) and it was very well situated with dramatic cliffside views as well as a direct view, which can be seen along with other overlooks along the cliffside walk. This walk not only skirted parts of the rim providing views of the falls from different angles, but it also provided views of the valley as well as have interpretive signs and thick vegetation giving you that naturesque feel.Fitzroy Falls comes from Yarrunga Creek (sourced by the Fitzroy Reservoir), which plunges 81m over a precipitous sandstone escarpment into Yarrunga Valley. The falls might have become a more consistent performer because the reservoir may have stored the water in such a way as to allow the falls to flow more reliably. Thus, it might explain why it was still doing pretty well despite the drought (though we've seen plenty of counterexamples where a dam holding up a reservoir completely robbed a waterfall of its water). There are numerous overlooks allowing you to experience Fitzroy Falls and surroundings so I reckon this is probably as close to a must-see waterfall as you're going to get this side of New South Wales. The walks go far enough to even reach the so-called Jersey Lookout, which gives you a direct frontal view of the falls from across the Yarrunga Valley as alluded to earlier on this page.
Given the popularity of this attraction, there is a self-pay car park. Once you walk past the visitor center, you can take the cliff-top walks which branch off in both directions near the top of Fitzroy Falls. If you persist long enough, you not only get additional views of the falls, but you might also reach other waterfalls such as Twin Falls. Directions: The car park is off of Nowra Road (Road 79 according to our map) right next to the Fitzroy Falls Reservoir. We came to this waterfall from Belmore Falls, but you can also approach from the other side leaving the Illawarra Highway (Hwy 48) either on Hwy 79 (Nowra Rd) or on Sheepwash Rd through Avoca.
