Florence Falls

Top down view of Florence Falls

Florence Falls is a gorgeous and very popular and rare year-round waterfall in Litchfield National Park.

Of all the Litchfield and Kakadu waterfalls we saw during our trip, this was the only one at the time that had people swimming in it for the others were closed off due to the presence of saltwater crocodiles. I guess the watercourse of Florence Creek is isolated enough from saltwater access that the crocs don't make it up here - at least not when we were there in early June 2006. The creek tumbles in multiple drops eventually reaching the bottom in a segmented plunge of what I think is about 20-25m tall (possibly 30-40m in total, but this is a WAG).

We noticed the falls were quite popular and it probably helps if you have wheelchair access from the car park to the overlook of the falls (as pictured above) as well as lots of tour buses making a stop here. From the vantage point of the overlook, we were not only able to see the dual columns of the main falls, but we could also see waterfalls further upstream.

Some mounds are over 5m tallBeyond the overlook, we took a steep but fairly easy trail down to the base of Florence Falls. There is a well-developed path with stairs in the steepest parts. For a full frontal view of the falls from right across its large plunge pool, I had to do a little rock scramble for it, but I'm sure it's easier if the waterflow is less as the Dry Season wears on.

Another worthwhile diversion while you're up at the falls is the Termite Mounds, which is a short distance on the Litchfield Park Road from the turnoff to Florence Falls and is well signposted. Now while such mounds are all over the place in this part of the north of Australia, this particular spot seems to have some unusually large ones plus have a very high concentration of them.

Directions: The turnoff to the car park is well-signed and on the north-side of the Litchfield Park Road some 41km west of Batchelor. It sits just beyond the Buley Rockhole, which has its own series of pools and falls.
