Kalang Falls sits at the bottom of a hanging valley carved by the Kanangra Creek.
It was not flowing well when we were there (in November 2006) despite several consecutive days of rain so I'm not able to tell if this is a very seasonal waterfall with a small drainage or if the drought affected it to the point that even the recent rains couldn't replenish its flow.
There is more to this waterfall that what you can see from the official trail. Abseilers who have the gear and the nerves to scale the cliffs can see some of the other waterfall tiers on the Kanangra Creek (I reckon one of these tiers is the actual Kanangra Falls, which we weren't able to see from the official trail - probably because the stream didn't have enough water).
From the Kanangra Walls Lookout area and car park, the waterfall walk begins to descend down steps with a few small sections of friction pitches. You're looking at a walk of about 60 minutes return.
Directions: Getting here requires a very long out-and-back day tour from the Blue Mountains area passing by the Jenolan Caves. We took Hwy 32 (Great Western Hwy) past Blackheath and towards Lithgow until we saw the Jenolan Caves Road to the left. Then, we followed the Jenolan Caves road getting through the caves complex (including a long cave or natural arch; not sure how you'd classify that). Beyond the cave, we then junctioned with Kanangra Road, where we made a left and followed the unsealed road towards its end near the Kanangra Walls, which probably is an additional half hour one-way from the caves.
It bode ill. "I can't remember the last time it rained," the man in Devonport had said. And there I was looking forward to photographing waterfalls. Things change though;...[more]
