Mapleton Falls

A disappointing view of Mapleton Falls

Mapleton Falls looked to be a fairly tall waterfall with a panorama visible from the lookout platform at its top.

Unfortunately, the view of the falls itself was disappointing as the falls was barely visible (see above photo) and there didn't seem to be a way to get a better view from the forested base.

Personally, I wonder why they didn't make a track going to the base of this waterfall. Perhaps the forested base was too ecologically sensitive? Or it was too difficult to reach the bottom from the top?

Adding to the disappointment, there was another nearby waterfall here called Kondalilla Falls, which drops 80m. Unfortunately, during our May 2008 visit, the trail access to the best view of this waterfall was being worked on so we weren't able to even visit that waterfall.

Directions: Mapleton Falls is near the town of Mapleton about 105km north of Brisbane. The mountains here are the Blackall Range, which itself is part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

From Brisbane we headed north on Bruce Hwy for a little over an hour then turned left onto Bli Bli Rd, which eventually became Mapleton Rd (the switch happens as we left Nambour). About 13km from Bruce Hwy, Mapleton Rd junctions with Obi Obi Rd. We went onto that small road and took it until we saw the Mapleton Falls sign where we then turned right onto its spur road. We took that spur road to its end where there was the car park.

We used this waterfall as a little waterfalling detour to break up the long drive from Brisbane to Rockhampton. However, I could totally envision this area could be a little bit of an escape from Brissie for residents.
