Minnamurra Falls

The Upper Minnamurra Falls

Minnamurra Falls is an impressive two-tiered waterfall nestled deep in the serene Minnamurra Rainforest just a few minutes inland from Kiama (which itself is known for some pretty active blowholes).

Even though we had feared the worst due to some of
Australia's worst droughts in its recorded history (even the sign at the visitor center didn't sound encouraging as it acknowledged the drought), we were pleasantly surprised to see this waterfall flow fairly well as you can see from the photographs.

In order to reach the waterfall, we had to take a very well established boardwalk through the lush rainforest itself while checking out many interpretive signs talking about various aspects of the rainforest. The path is so well-established that I think wheelchair access is available for most of the lower loop (yes, this is a loop walk).

The only safe view of the Lower Minnamurra FallsBut we still had to walk further than the lower loop to get to the falls. At the the opposite end of the loop, then path ascended up a steep hill that left us huffing and puffing. During this ascent, we passed over the top of Lyrebird Falls (can't photograph it due to the position of the track) as well as passing by the lookout for the Lower Falls.

The Lower Falls used to be the main tourist draw to the area until a landslide in 1989 cut off access its base. Thus, the only view we could get of it was from the top down and it was a rather unsatisfying view at best.

The waterfall spur track terminated at the Upper Falls, which is pictured above. Even though this tier of the waterfall lacks the height and drama of the lower one, it's still pretty good and worth the effort to get there (IMHO).

Directions: From Kiama, we took the Jamberoo Road (Hwy 80) west as it meandered through some foothills sprinkled with farms and residences. Eventually, it junctioned with Jamberoo Mountain Road (the 80 continues that way) where shortly after continuing on the 80, we then followed a signposted spur on the right to the Minnamurra Rainforest. The road will then end at the visitor centre and car park.
