Mungalli Falls is one of the more impressive waterfalls of the 17km Waterfalls Circuit (though technically, we didn't take Theresa Creek Rd to get to it).
We definitely thought it was one of the prettier and taller waterfalls we had seen this part of Queensland as it dropped over 75m over a handful of leaps.
We took a walk that started from the Student Village & Wilderness Retreat then led past a difficult obstacle course (as tempting as it is to just give it a go, please get permission before using it) before descending down a gravel road towards the base of the falls. I think there was also a glow worm site somewhere en route as well (though we didn't check it out since it was too bright).
It took us about an hour to do the walk as well as spend lots of time enjoying the falls from both its upper viewpoint (which also doubled as an abseiling area) near the retreat as well as the base. The gravel road looked like it could support vehicles (albeit a bit narrow and steep), but I'm not sure if anyone could drive it. We were perfectly content to just park near the retreat and walk.
As we started the walk down to the base of the falls, there was also an attractive rivuleted cascade, but (as a sign so succintly stated) that was not the falls itself.
Directions: The turnoff for Mungalli Falls is on Junction Rd about 11km east of the Millaa Millaa Tourist Park (west of the turnoff for the Waterfalls Circuit) along the Palmerston Hwy (Hwy 25) or 49km west of Innisfail (also along the Palmerston Hwy). The Student Village and Wilderness Retreat complex and car park is about 3km along Junction Rd.
I'm sure there are other ways to get there, but this was the approach we took.
It bode ill. "I can't remember the last time it rained," the man in Devonport had said. And there I was looking forward to photographing waterfalls. Things change though;...[more]
