Quinninup Falls

Quinninup Falls

Quinninup Falls is a nice 10m waterfall that tumbles onto a sandy beach area along the Cape-to-Cape Trail in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.

It sits in the popular Margaret River Wine Country so you can easily visit the waterfall as part of a food and wine tour. There are also some interesting caves in the area (we visited the Ngilgi Cave) to further keep you occupied in the region.

The falls wasn't flowing particularly well when we were there in June 2006 despite rain clouds threatening just off shore. I reckon you'll have to time your visit for later in the winter or early spring to see the falls perform better. I'm sure if this waterfall had been flowing better, it would've been one of those near-ocean beach waterfalls where we could've easily spent several hours just chilling.

Still, I found the coastal walk that we took to get to the falls quite scenic and interesting. As a matter of fact, I think this walk is a small part of the overall Cape-to-Cape Walk Trail.

Coastal views along the Cape-to-Cape TrailSpeaking of the walk, we left the car park that didn't require a 4wd (see directions below). We walked about half an hour to the north until we descended a sandy hill (it's a brutal climb on the way back up) into a drainage area. Then, we walked inland along the wash or the trail towards the head of the drainage where we saw what's left of the falls.

Directions: Since we didn't have a 4wd vehicle, we took what we thought was the easiest access to the falls, which is by taking the Caves Rd towards Moses Rock Rd. We followed Moses Rock Rd until we reached a fork near the coast. From there, we headed north and followed the unsealed path to a car park. This car park is just one of many stops along the scenic coastal Cape-to-Cape Trail.

There is also another shorter road taking you to the falls as well, but this requires a high clearance vehicle as there are underlying rocks jutting up from the road surface. I think it's on Quinninup Road, but I can't say for sure since we didn't take our passenger car hire through it.
