Trail Canyon Falls

The base of Trail Canyon Falls

Trail Canyon Falls is probably the prettiest local waterfall I've seen so far. However, even for a local waterfall, it takes a little work to see this little beauty. Getting the view you see above requires a little bit of scrambling, but it's well worth it.

The falls is located near the Big Tujunga Canyon in the rugged foothill mountains near Sunland. It's sort of the western side of the San Gabriel Mountains where most of the other local waterfalls are on the eastern side of the San Gabriels. So this waterfall doesn't quite get the same fanfare as the others in the foothills further east of here.

Once you get to the car park (see directions below), it's a 4-mile round trip hike with modest uphill climbing and a fair bit of exposure to the sun on the climb. The official trail takes you to the top of the falls with limited partial views of that waterfall along the way. However, a steep scramble (reasonably doable, but not for everyone) down a gully with a guardrail fronting it takes you to the base of the waterfall, where there is a pleasant little cove and the views are infinitely better.

Directions: To get to the car park, take the 210 Freeway towards Sunland (west of the Hwy 2 Angeles Crest Highway) getting off at the Sunland Blvd exit. This becomes Foothill Blvd, which you take it east to Mt Gleason Ave (amidst a residential area). Turn left onto Mt Gleason Ave and drive a little over a mile where you then turn right onto Big Tujunga Canyon Road.

Now, you're on the mountain road, which you follow nearly 3.5 miles to a signposted turnoff for "Trail Canyon" to your left. You're now entering the Angeles National Forest (so pay and display Forest or Adventure Passes are required for parked vehicles). This turnoff is a dirt road, where it can be scary in parts as it has deep ruts, but I think most passenger cars should have no problem if you take it slow (at least that was the case back in 2001 or 2002 when I last did this). Keep bearing right at the junctions until you reach the car park at the end of the 1/4-mile road.

Update (3/14/2010): Julie and I tried to visit this waterfall this past week, but we learned that it was closed as a result of the Station Fire last August. We're not sure when it's going to re-open, but this falls is high on our priority list for revisiting local waterfalls so we're sure to pass along any news of re-openings since we'll probably be headed to this falls when it happens...
