The Southern Great Lakes States Waterfalls was my way of aggregating the waterfalls that we happened to see in the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. I grouped them in this way because these were mostly flat states with limited opportunities for waterfalling (though Ohio might be the exception as its eastern side seemed to have many more waterfalls than the handful we were fortunate to see). That said, just the fact that we managed to visit such waterfalls in this part of the heartland of the USA (where vast farms are more prevalent than rugged Nature) further demonstrated to us how waterfalling could surprise us and open our eyes to new and different experiences even when we thought we knew what these regions had to offer. It was yet another example of how this activity helps us clear the fog of ignorance by just getting out there and seeing for ourselves what we've been missing. In fact, just about all of the waterfalls we had experienced in this part of the Midwest were within reasonable driving distance from cities like Cleveland, Indianapolis, and Chicago!

Among the waterfalling highlights of our visit to this part of the Great Lakes were Brandywine Falls and Lanternmans Falls, where history and Nature co-existed amidst a sea of industrial development providing us a glimpse of the nation-building era of the United States in the 19th century. And then, we were also able to visit a waterfall (although it was dry) in less than two hours drive from the city of Chicago in Cascade Falls in Matthiessen State Park. Who knew?!?

Indeed, there's definitely more to see and do in the way of waterfalling in this section of Americana, and we hope to be able to do just that to experience more of why we call it "America the Beautiful."
