Plitvice Waterfalls: When is the best time to visit?

Incoming bad weather

When is the best time to visit
Plitvice Waterfalls?

Personally, I'd say depends on what you're after? Stable weather? Water volume? Colors? Fewer tourists?

Let's first tell you that we visited the falls at the very end of May 2010 and into early June 2010. Weather wise, our experience was a mix between heavy rains and sunny skies before returning to heavy rains and light rain again. Now to be fair, apparently historically, it's normally starts to warm up into the 30C range at this time of year, but we happened to go when the weather was unusually wet and cool (the same system of storms that produced floods in Poland also influenced our weather).

Otherwise, late Spring and early Summer should provide high water volume, fairly stable weather (except when we were there), and perhaps a slight head start before the tourism crush (though it was already quite busy when we were there).

Mid- to Late Summer (July through August and into September) is their peak tourism season. I'm sure it gets both hot and very crowded, and the rates become even higher than they were during our visit.

Autumn (late September through November) is when you're supposed to get fall colors. Even though the water volume isn't quite as high as late Spring, the colors of the leaves mixing with the colors of the lakes (especially when the weather's cooperative) yields a real feast for the eyes and your camera clicks. So sometimes, volume doesn't necessarily mean the best experience as this season would attest.

Finally, I believe Winter is their low season. I don't think they get much snow in these parts, but it also means the least number of tourists. Of course, you'll have to contend with the unpredictability of the weather, but sometimes people want a more quieter experience despite what Nature throws at them.
