We entered the park from the south, having spent the night outside of Yellowstone at Grassy Lake. It was a moderate 8-mile hike to reach the falls, after which we swam in a nearby pool, heated by hot springs. I highly recommend taking the time.

Hiked there in 1978

In the summer of 1978 I was working at the front desk of Lake Lodge. A small group of us hiked to Union Falls and camped upstream.

Union Falls

I have been to the falls three times. I have taken all three routes to the falls and I recommend taking the Fish Lake trailhead. It is mostly used by stock users and has at least three river crossings but the elevation grade is much lower than the other routes.
A word of caution for anyone who is going to Union Falls. Do not attempt to reach the bottom of the falls. It is a hard climb and the view is worse than that of the overlook.

Very Nice

I hiked to this waterfall in early July 2010. The waterfall is beautiful. We were the only people on the mosquito infested trail. Even with 100% deet, my husband and I had at least 20 bites each. Thankfully, the mist off the falls kept them at bay while we ate lunch. You do need to ford a river to get to this one.

Failed in Our First Attempt
by: World of Waterfalls

This was one of the goals of our Yellowstone trip back in June 2004.

Unfortunately, we didn't make it as our failed excursion into the Bechler Backcountry was complicated by a near accident at Terraced Falls and a rather intimidating Falls River crossing (it was running a bit high and fast) on the Union Falls trail itself.

This may be a pipe dream, but I long to go there as part of a larger backpacking trip to that part of the park.
