INTRODUCTION

Puaa Kaa Falls (or Pua'a Ka'a Falls; rolling pig) resides in the Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside Park, which made it one of the rare waterfalls on the Hana Highway where public access was welcome.

For one reason or another, we overlooked this park in our 2003 visit. And then in our 2007 visit, the park was closed due to sewage work (a real bummer, so I guess we weren't welcome here after all).

Anyways, there are two waterfalls in the park. The first one (see the photograph at the top of this page) was real easy to see as it was right by the official car park. I'm guessing it was about 15-20ft tall. It looked like it would've been a real nice place for a picnic, but I believe the water diversion from EMI ditches further upstream tends to keep the water flow low unless it has raining like it was during our visit.

I had read that it's possible to do some awkward, muddy scrambling past this lower waterfall, and then walk atop an embankment above a water diversion ditch (very scary for those afraid of heights apparently). That ultimately leads to a second (upper) similar waterfall whose water flow has not been diverted (for better flow). I'll have to come back here one of these days to check out that waterfall.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

The large car park for Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park is on the left hand side of the road, 0.6 miles past the 22-mile post.

For some context, the drive to get here from Ka'anapali or Lahaina was at least 60 miles (under 2.5 hours drive). Coming from Hana, it would be 12 miles (30 minutes drive) going northwest.
