Waiulili Falls

Waiulili Falls

Waiulili Falls is the second of the ocean-bound waterfalls accessible via the sacred Waipi'o Valley (the other being
Kaluahine Falls).

After the disappointment of Kaluahine Falls, I was determined to see this waterfall, and that posed a rather interesting dilemma. You see, the big problem was that this meant I had to do more awkward scrambling for another 1/4-mile beyond Kaluahine Falls, but the space between the crashing waves and rockfall-prone cliffs narrowed even more during this stretch. So you can bet the whole time I did this scramble, I was very nervous about a rogue wave plucking me into the turbulent tiger shark-infested waters with sharp rocks to boot.

Well, the payoff was that I got to see (twice) a pretty ocean-bound waterfall with fairly healthy flow. Apparently, this falls was given longer life as it was not only helped by a spring, but additional water diversion might have made the Waiulili Stream the beneficiary of outflow and/or agricultural waste. Now I only went as far as my first glimpse of the falls though theoretically I could've continued scrambling further for a closer look. It was just that I was too nervous to proceed further given the unpredictability of the ocean.

While the falls didn't look all that tall from the ground, we were fortunate to see the falls from a helicopter, and that was when we realized just how tall this waterfall really was. I don't have the figures for this one, but for sure it seemed to span the entire height of the cliff!

Directions: This waterfall shares the same trailhead as that of Kaluahine Falls and Hi'ilawe Falls. See the Hi'ilawe Falls page for driving directions to Waipi'o Valley Lookout, and the Kaluahine Falls page for the first part of this walk and scramble.
