Fardagafoss

The lower Fardagafoss waterfall

Fardagafoss seemed to be a a pair of attractive waterfalls just upslope from the town of Egilsstađir. I actually wasn't sure whether this referred to both waterfalls or just one of the them. In any case, they were pretty and well worth the effort to get a closer look at both of them (it took me about 35 minutes round trip).

As I walked from the car park, the trail immediately started climbing (seemed like a common characteristic of many waterfall hikes in Iceland. About 350m into the hike, I saw the first waterfall, which had an attractive rectangular drop that I could see from its side. It didn't look like there was a way to get into the gorge and closer to the falls so I had to settle for the somewhat distant view from the trail.

About 550m beyond the first waterfall, I eventually made it to the upper waterfall, which was actually a two-tiered cascade. The trail continued beyond the best viewpoints of this waterfall, but it yielded different angled views of the falls. I didn't venture beyond the falls (assuming the trail kept going, which I didn't think it did).

Personally, I thought the lower waterfall was the more interesting of the two.

Directions: From the main road (part of Ring Road) through Egilsstađir, turn onto Route 93 and follow it for about 5km to the signed car park for Fardagafoss.

Note that Route 93 is the mountain pass road connecting Egilsstađir and Seyđisfjörđur. So this is a main thoroughfare.
