Waterfalls of Iceland's Interior are scattered throughout in some of the country's most forbidding landscapes. In Saga Times, the interior was looked upon as being so harsh and desolate that Outlaws were allowed to seek refuge there and only regain acceptance in society if they managed to survive. The landscape is a mix of mossy tundra with volcanic sandur plains, vast glaciers, and volcanically active thermal areas. You may find the odd sheep here and there when they're allowed to graze in the highlands, but for the most part, it's Europes last true wilderness.
It's not easy to see even a fraction of the waterfalls in the Interior because of rugged terrain and the unbridged glacial river crossings, which means you'll need a 4wd to even navigate these parts. Thus, we've only been able to manage a few waterfall sightings here. Perhaps the most famous of the waterfalls in the interior is Öfærufoss, which many people see on the way to the popular Landmannalaugur when approaching from the south.
Indeed, the Interior is truly for the adventurous but the sights are memorable.
