Waterfall by Holaskol

The Waterfall by Hólaskol

The Waterfall by Holaskol was something we stumbled upon accidentally while we were on our Landmannalaugur Tour from Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The driver made a stop at the guesthouses here at what I think was called Hólaskol, and that was when we noticed a big waterfall hidden in the adjacent gorge. I didn't think this was a normal stop on the tour (I think the driver had some business here), but it was fortunate for us to have noticed it.

So the next day, we drove here on our own and scrambled around to get a better look at the falls (under uncomfortably rainy conditions). It was not easy to get such a good view since the falls was deep in the gorge and angled in a way that its base was mostly obscured from view. Any further attempts to improve the viewing angle would've meant getting dangerous close to the cliff.

Honestly, I'm not sure what the real name of this waterfall is called. I haven't seen any literature about it, and that's why I've referred to this waterfall with the underwhelming name of "Waterfall by Hólaskol."

Directions: From Kirkjubæjarklaustur, we went 28km west on the Ring Road until we reached the signed junction for Route 208. From there, we drove about 30km connecting along routes 208, 247, and 239 (which was by the way the Fjallabak Route leading to both Eldgjá and Landmannalaugur from the east).
