Is there a waterfall that you can camp by and swim in?

by Heather Moore
(Oklahoma)

I'm looking for a romantic vacation where there is a waterfall that you can camp out by and swim in. either in the U.S. or North America or even a island like Costa Rica...

Boren Owen Shoal Falls, Brevard NC
by: Anonymous

You will need a personal guide to get out to this waterfall. It was used over 100 years ago to generate power for the water wheel that was used to make grits. The property was developed with a beautiful community center on the lake with No BODY THERE TO USE IT NOW because the place went bankrupt and is owned by the bank. Craig Miller is a local grown man who gives tours there and he is the only one that I know of that can get you back there. I thought it was funny when we got there because there is a stick in the dirt with a white tag on it and it says, cell phone hot spot here. Out in the middle of nowhere it truly was the only spot that you could get four bars! Google Craig Miller, Transylvania County, NC if you are interested.

Yes.
by: Richard Gibbard

I recommend the Tahquamenon Falls State Park in Michiigan's Upper Peninsula. It's located near the village of Paradise. There's a campground at the lower falls. Don't panic at the sight of the brown water. That's just tannin from the hundred thousand or so acres of forest which the river drains. It's really quite safe. But get there before September if you want to swim.

I've posted an entry on this site about the place, kf you want to look it up.

3 places in Upstate NY
by: Ron Andrews

I don't know how romantic they would seem, but there are at least three places in Upstate NY. Buttermilk Falls State Park near Ithaca has a camp ground, but not next to the falls. There is also an established swim area beneath the main falls. Stoneybrook State Park near Dansville has similar facilities, but the swimming area is downstream from the first waterfall. There are some waterfalls on private land in Steuben County that might suit you needs, but the water will be cold and I can't volunteer a place I don't own. (Check out the Steuben County Falls in this collection.)

Our experience doing that is limited...
by: World of Waterfalls

The only waterfall I can think of where I've actually camped next to and was safe enough to swim in (though the water was REALLY COLD) was the White Cascade (also called Glen Aulin Falls). But since it involves a bit of a hike (treated more like an overnight backpack), I doubt this fits your profile of a romantic vacation that lets you do this.

I've also seen people camp (illegally) by Salmon Creek Falls in Big Sur.

I'm afraid I'm not too much help on this one since we generally don't look to camp next to waterfalls unless it was remote enough to be uncrowded and allow for camping.

You may also want to check out this thread, which at least had some other replies about the waterfalls you can swim in (though not necessarily camp next to).
