Canaima Lagoon Waterfalls

Boat before Salto Hacha - perhaps the most dramatic of the Canaima Lagoon Waterfalls

The Canaima Lagoon Waterfalls are a compulsory bonus for all visitors entering the indigenous village of Canaima bound for the world famous
Angel Falls. We were able to see this series of waterfalls from the air just as we were about to land in Canaima. Plus, we were also able to see these falls from the shores of the lagoon in Canaima (La Laguna de Canaima) and at our camp on the other side of the lagoon.

The cluster of powerfully wide waterfalls on the Carrao River (El Río Carrao) consists of Salto Ucaima, Salto Golondrina, Salto Wadaima, and Salto Hacha (or Ucaima Falls, Golondrina Falls, Wadaima Falls, and Hacha Falls). There are also other rapids nearby such as Salto Ará though we were only able to see its mist rising above the top of its drop from our camp (campamento). Salto Ucaima is the one nearest to Canaima village while wide Salto Hacha is the furthest from the village.

Salto Ucaima is marginally tapped for local hydroelectricity, and we were able to walk through Canaima village to a lookout (mirador) right at the start of its drop. Getting frontal views of Salto Hacha required at least a boat ride to the opposite end of the lagoon (though we suspect many tours do this - including ours). We even saw other tours taking passengers to a shore next to the falls where it looked like it was possible to even walk behind it!

We met a Norwegian group camping with us who managed to go behind the falls on their own from our camp. However, this involved wading in the lagoon and the locals typically frown upon people doing excursions with a certain degree of risk without a guide.

Directions: We were able to experience this waterfall automatically as part of our tour to Angel Falls. Planes would land in Canaima where it's possible to walk around town up to the brink of Salta Ucaima. Our tour took us across the lagoon where we crossed in front of all the main Canaima Lagoon waterfalls since our camp was on the opposite end of the lagoon from Canaima village.
