Mountaintop Waterfalls

I would like to know how enough water accumulates at the top of a mountaintop to cause a plunging waterfall.

I think it bubbles up through cracks in the ground. I'm just guessing.

There is a crater that fills with water that the river has dug out over time and a lake or large pool of water that forms over time. The source is rain that gathers and many tributaries lead into one body of water.

Waterfalls never flow from the peak of a mountain, but they may flow from a high ridge. there must be some sort of basin to collect rain water. For example, Mahon Falls flows form a ridge high in the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford, Ireland. If you climb up to the top of the falls (there is a reasonable trail on the left side) you will find that there is a broad plateau on top with a rim around it. (http://photos.randrews4.com/photos/i-pw9w3k9/0/L/i-pw9w3k9-L.jpg)
