Natural State

I think it is a crime that they have not kept the falls in a more natural state. The falls are an amazing sight, no doubt, but it is too bad they have built so many hotels, casinos and other structures around this natural wonder.

I have to agree that there's something a bit strange about a world wonder being surrounded by concrete walkways, casinos, high rise buildings, roads, and a hydroelectric facility.

While I know this is an integral part of the regional economy as well as power generation for much of the eastern seaboard, you sometimes get the feeling that nature's beauty tends to lose out when monetary concerns are involved.

As a matter of fact, conservationists such as John Muir have actually used Niagara Falls as a case study for what happens when Nature becomes overexploited. Ultimately, it became fodder for what would end up as the National Park System that we know today.

That's why we put Iguazu Falls and Victoria Falls ahead of Niagara Falls on our World's Top 10 Best Waterfalls List.
