Acland Falls

Acland Falls

Acland Falls is one of three waterfalls in the pretty peaceful Peel Forest a couple hours drive from Christchurch. The 14m falls didn't blow you away with its size, but as far as we were concerned, this excursion was more about the lush scenery and the stream walking required to get here.

It took us about 50 minutes round trip to visit this waterfall, which might seem like a lot of trouble for such a small waterfall. However, considering this helped to break up a long drive from Christchurch to Aoraki, I certainly didn't mind this opportunity for a little exercise as well as a good stretch of the legs.

From the trailhead (see directions below), the trail basically climbed steeply before leveling out and eventually descending to the stream. Once at the stream, we had to walk within it (which fortunately was very shallow and didn't pose any problems to our Gore-tex boots) for the last five minutes.

Directions: The way we went was from SH1 turning right at Delamain St then quickly turning left onto the Hinds-Arundel Rd for about 21km to the Geraldine Rd, where we turned left crossing over the Rangitata River. Just beyond the river, we turned right onto Bridge St. Eventually, we turned left onto Peel St, which then veered towards Pratt Rd where we turned right. Pratt Rd eventually joined into Peel Forest Rd, which we continued on for another 10km (road eventually becomes Rangitata Gorge Rd) towards the Acland Falls trailhead.

Parking at the trailhead didn't seem official. Even though we managed to park near the trailhead, I wondered if we were supposed to have parked somewhere in the campground about 1km away.

Alternatively, if you're coming from the town of Geraldine, then go north on SH79 (Main North Rd) until you see Peel Forest Rd to your left. Turn left onto that road and follow it to the Acland Falls trailhead.
