The vast majority of visitors to New Zealand is by air. For most people, the country sits half way across the world so it's going to be a fairly long flight regardless of where you're from.
If you're in Australia, it's about 3 hours from Sydney to Auckland. If you're in the United States, it's about 12.5 hours from Los Angeles to Auckland. Once you've landed at the Auckland International Airport, you can hire a car and drive throughout the country (including catching a ferry from Wellington across the Cook Strait to Picton on the South Island). It's also possible to take domestic flights around the country (Auckland to Christchurch flights take about 90 minutes).
By far the most common way of getting around is by car. Driving is on the left side of the road (so the steering wheel in the car is on the right). If you're unfamiliar with driving on the other side of the road, it takes a little getting used to (especially if you hire a stick shift and have to shift with your left arm). However, keep in mind that the driver is always closer to the center of the road and look right first before looking both ways when entering an intersection. At least the pedals are the same (accelerator on the right, brakes on the middle, clutch on the left if applicable).
