The Central North Island regions encompass the country's most spectacular thermal features along with Maori culture. Along with these features are waterfalls that can provide a change of scenery as they can be found in lush forests and tall cliffs.
For the purposes of this website, I'm including the regions of Rotorua, Taupo, Bay of Plenty, and Hawke's Bay in this section.
While Rotorua and Taupo are well known for their thermal parks (e.g. Te Whakarewarewa, Wai-o-tapu, Waimangu, Craters of the Moon, etc.), waterfalls can be found here as well. Some run hot like Kakahi Falls while others seeming burst out of the cliff walls like Tarawera Falls.
Further to the south near the city of Taupo, you'll find the country's most popular natural tourist attraction in Huka Falls. Also, between Taupo and the art deco city of Napier lies the spectacular three-pronged Waipunga Falls.
The Bay of Plenty region contains the port city of Tauranga as well as the McLaren Falls.
The Hawke's Bay region includes the remote Te Urewera National Park, which contains the largest section of uninterrupted native forest in the country. You can also find very unique and memorable waterfalls (such as Mokau Falls and Papakorito Falls) in this neck of the woods as well.
