Owharoa Falls

Owharoa Falls with Maoris enjoying themselves at the falls

Owharoa Falls is a small but attractive waterfall nestled within the Karangahake Gorge, which is known for old gold mining sites in addition to the gorge itself. But on our visit, we only spent time at the falls but didn't allow ourselves any additional time nor energy to check out some of the other things the region had on offer. In any case, this falls was also the venue for a handful of Maori youngsters swimming beneath the falls while also upping the ante by climbing to the ledges behind the middle parts of the falls, and then doing daredevil cliff dives to the deep plunge pool below. Such displays of acrobatics even drew applause from other visits who just happened to be there.

There was a short path that descended from the limited parking at the pullouts down to the base of the falls. But prior to making the descent, we did notice partially visible upper tiers of the falls though we weren't successful in finding a way to get a better view (let alone access them).

Directions: Owharoa Falls is right off the Waitawheta Rd a little over 12km east of Paeroa (yes, that's the town where the famous L&P (Lemon and Paeroa) soft drink was created) or 9km west of Waihi along SH2. Given the high rate of speed of SH2, this turnoff can be somewhat easy to blow past.

Assuming you've made the turn south onto Waitawheta Rd, cross the bridge over Ohinemuri River and then continue barely 0.2km looking for a place to park on the right side. You might even notice the falls off to the right prior to stopping the car.
