Frequently fronting postcards, Purakaunui Falls often competes with McLean Falls for the title of the Catlins' most attractive waterfall. This 15m waterfall tumbles in three tiers, giving it a certain grace and character that more than makes up for its lack of height.
There are several detours off the Southern Scenic Drive leading to the car park for the falls. A short walk of 5-10 minutes leads to a wooden platform allowing you to enjoy the falls (as pictured above). You can also see the falls from its top as the trail pretty much follows its watercourse.
