Seeming like it bursts out of the cliff, Tarawera Falls rewards visitors willing to go a little out of the way to see a waterfall. The 35m waterfall may be seen together with a taller ephemeral companion when it has been raining heavily recently.
Getting to the falls requires a permit, which is attainable from the Kawerau Visitor Center. You should inquire about their hours prior to making the drive out this way from Rotorua (or Whakatane).
