For the purposes of this section, Central Norway encompasses the counties of Buskerud, Oppland, Sør-Trøndelag, and Nord-Trøndelag (see map below). Being away from most of the spectacular Fjord Norway scenery along the west coast of the country, this section features a blend of vast alpine forests, mountains popular for skiing and ice climbing, great plateaus suitable for some of the last wild reindeer herds (as well as other megafauna), and an array of lakes. Anchored by the charming city of Trondheim, a former capital of Norway, you'll leave most of the conventional tourist routes as you head north in this gateway to Northern Norway. Waterfalls are more scattered and less concentrated in this region. So waterfall lovers have to be willing to go off the beaten path and away from the E6 artery to find some of them. Among such falls, you can find the remarkable Henfallet as well as Vesleulfossen.
