Eidsfossen

A sideways view of the giant waterfall dwarfing Julie

Eidsfossen is a massive waterfall on the Gloppen River near the town of Sandane. We saw the falls with such a powerful flow that even the hydroelectric scheme nearby didn't seem to slow the waterfall down. And typical of river waterfalls that have power but lack height, we noticed a salmon ladder bypassing the torrent thereby allowing the salmon to continue further upstream. That ladder is said to be 230m and one of the longest in the world. Speaking of salmon, I learned after the trip that apparently the largest known catch along this stretch of river was an amazing 26kg!

We were able to see this 33m falls from a couple of vantage spots. The first was near a hydroelectric facility where we went down some stairs right to a fenced-off lookout next to some diversion tubes and a salmon ladder. The second viewing area was along the banks of the river where mist of the falls made the area both muddy and difficult to photograph thanks to the water droplets. The ugly power station to the left of the falls also kind of made the place a bit less appealing to linger around and photograph.

Directions: The way we went to Eidsfossen was from Byrkjelo. We drove west on E39 for 14km as it passed by the scenic Breimvatnet. Near Vassenden, the turnoff leading to the falls was on our left (a blue sign tipped us off to look for a way to the falls).

Once we took the turnoff, we had to watch out for potholes on the unpvaed road. Evntually, we reached a large clearing where we were able to park the car and walk down the stairs to the first overlook mentioned above.

We then drove further down the unpaved road towards a power station where we could park the car and walk along the banks of the river for a misty view.
