This was not Espelandsfossen (Granvin), but it was what we saw when we searched for it

INTRODUCTION

Espelandsfossen was one of two waterfalls that we targeted in the same county (Hordaland) by the same name. The other waterfall was in Oddadalen. This one was in the Granvin Municipality. Unfortunately, after our out-and-back detour to Osa, we completely forgot about being on the lookout for this waterfall. When I realized our mistake, we were getting pretty close to Skjervsfossen. At that point, we turned around and backtracked in search of Espelandsfossen.

During our backtracking, we felt like we were driving quite a ways towards Ulvik before turning around again. In hindsight, we probably didn't go far enough. When we compared our lone GPS waypoint from where we photographed the waterfall you see at the top of this page versus the actual location of Espelandsfossen shown on Norgeskart (formerly Norgesglasset), it turned out that the waterfall we happened to see was on Hagabekken (the Garden Brook?). So until we get it right, this page will just be a temporary placeholder until we fix this page.

Nevertheless, the falls was said to be roadside right across from the lake Espelandsvatnet, but from what we could tell, the fact that we completely missed it suggested that it might be hidden from view from the road. Instead, we noticed this other waterfall about 2km further west that we had mistaken for Espelandsfossen (as it was also across from Espelandsvatnet). Alas, we'll have to come back and try again.

To make matters worse, when we made our previous writeup of the Espelandsfossen in Granvin, we mistakenly thought what turned out to be Skarvefossen was this waterfall! Now that we have access to updated maps and I had found my long lost GPS coordinates, we are finally in a position to put out more accurate information on what we previously had confused!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

From Ulvik, we were supposed to have driven west on the Rv572 for about 10km. Then we were supposed to look for a local road leading further inland closer to the falls. Coming from Granvin, we were supposed to have driven 3km north on Rv13 then 9km east on Rv572.

Unfortunately for us, we continued hastily another 2km further west (or about 7km east of the Rv13/Rv572 junction).

For context, Granvin was 134km (over 2 hours drive) east of Bergen, 34km east of Voss, 32km (over 30 minutes) west of Eidfjord, and 342km (over 5 hours drive) west of Oslo.
