Fosselvfossen

Fosselvfossen

Fosselvfossen (The Falls River Falls?) was one of those unplanned waterfalls where we just happened to notice it on a paper place mat in a cafe in Storslett that just so happened to have a map of the area identifying this falls. It was quite a nice surprise for us as this free-leaping 64m waterfall was bathed in evening light while overlooking the inlet of Straumfjorden (235m above sea level).

I took a 2km path that immediately climbed up a well-defined path with red markings to help guide me through the lightly forested terrain. About 20 minutes later, the path continued to climb its way above the trees and into grassy terrain shared by sheep.

At this point, I was already able to get somewhat obstructed views of the falls so I scrambled some more on the grassy paddock (trying not to mind the heaps of tiny sheep dung) for a better look. Eventually, I ended up with the photo you see at the top of this page.

Getting closer to FosselvfossenOnce I was done taking photos, I was ready to head back, but that was when I realized that I somehow lost the trail. There were numerous false trails leading me astray, and I eventually scrambled until I got lucky regaining the trail going back down.

Given the steepness of the trail (it's all uphill on the way there, but all downhill on the way back), it took me a little over 30 minutes each way of hiking, but I think I might have taken a bit longer due to the scrambling on the paddock for a better view as well as getting a little bit lost on the way back.

Directions: From Storslett, head northeast on E6 for about 12km. Look for Sandnes Camping (or was it Fosselv Camping?) as the trail leaves uphill directly opposite the camping site turnoff. When I was there, the friendly proprietor at Sandnes camping allowed me to park the car in a clearing on her campground. But I'm sure if this option wasn't available, I noticed additional clearings to stop the car and hike on the falls side of the E6.
