Gjerdefossen was the first major (at least as far as we were concerned) waterfall we saw on the Geiranger Fjord Cruise. From the cruise, we were able to get direct looks at this 200m, but apparently there was also an accessible trail that left the Eagle's Road (Ørneveien) towards a profile view of the falls overlooking the scenic fjord. And it was that second option that completely forgot about and regret overlooking, and I guess we now have a reason to come back here and try that again...
The falls seemed to have somewhat light flow for such a named waterfall so I reckon it probably goes dry not far into Summer once its drainage has been depleted of the sourcing snowmelt.
Even though we didn't exercise the Eagle's Road access option, I believe you would have to drive north of Geiranger along Rv63 and up the switchbacks of Ørneveien. I believe there would be a place to pullout and do that hike (but again we hadn't done it so it's just speculation at this point).
You're right about the protruding rock that obscures the best views but having trekked there we thought we might try and get a little closer...[more]
