Hesjedalsfossen

Hesjedalsfossen

Hesjedalsfossen (I think is pronounced "HEH-sheh-dahls-foss-un") was a dual 70m waterfall facing the Oster Fjord (Osterfjorden). We happened to see it from a stone bridge right before a tunnel (so if we weren't going slow, which was hard to do considering how narrow the county road was, it would've been an easy waterfall to miss).

It was raining hard when we were here which made the short access trail leaving the road and descending beneath the stone bridge rather steep and slippery. I reckon we could've gotten views of the falls without the bridge in the foreground, but we were content with the views you see on this page.

The falls is said to be fed by lakes in the hanging Hesjedal Valley. Apparently what's special about this waterfall is that it's said to be on the only river in the Vaksdal municipality (kommune) that isn't disturbed for hydroelectric purposes.

Directions: While driving the Rv569, we had to be careful as it is narrow for just about its entire stretch. But we had to share the road in bi-directional traffic with other motorists (including trucks) who were more comfortable passing by us without flinching on the narrow road (that made us uncomfortable).

The Rv569 turnoff is about 27km north of where the E16/Mv7 junction or about 33km west of Voss along the E16.

Once on the Rv569, drive north for about 14km where the falls will be on your right just before the tunnel.
