Huldrefossen

Huldrefossen with rainbow

Huldrefossen (I've also seen it spelled Huldefossen as well as Huldrafossen) is perhaps the most beautiful of the waterfalls in the so-called Waterfall Country area of the Førde and Gaular municipalities. This waterfall was memorable because it was situated in an agricultural school where public access is permitted, but we found ourselves trying not to step on the mounds of cow dung. Unfortunately for Julie, she thought one of them was a rock and ended up getting the stuff all over her shoe (including the top).

This 87m waterfall tumbles in two powerful tiers. The high flow of the falls was enough to generate mist that produced a nice arcing rainbow right in front of it during our visit. Thus, it was a fun falls to photograph. We were even trying to see if we could capture a photograph of a cow before the falls.

During my research, I read that local myths have said that the name of the falls originated from a beautiful woman named Huldra. She was said to be a sociable and attractive lady whose only flaw was having a cow's tail. So she had an insatiable lust for men. In any case, the characteristics of beauty and popularity along with the cows in front of the falls were certainly fitting for this waterfall.

From the car park (see directions below), we had to do a little walking along an unsigned paved path that passed through some of the agricultural school before crossing a bridge and reaching the gated grazing area. We were able to get through the gate, but we had to make sure the gate stayed closed after passing through so the livestock couldn't leave.

Directions: From Førde, take E39/Mv5 east for about 8km to Mo. There is a signed turnoff for the falls on the right. It is about a kilometer west of the junction involving E39/Mv5 and Rv13 at Moskog. Take this turnoff, which leads to a car park for the agricultural school.
