Hydnefossen

Hydnefossen in Hemsedal

Hydnefossen is a tall waterfall plunging 140m down the Veslehorn mountain in the mountainous municipality of Hemsedal. It is visible from the Rv52 just south of the township of Hemsedal, which itself is a popular skiing and ice climbing playground.

This waterfall is one of those multi-columned waterfalls that look great when viewed in profile (see above) but doesn't really look like much when seen directly (see below). It made me wonder how ice climbers could use this waterfall during the winter. But a trip to Yosemite in the winter made me realize that even light flowing waterfalls have thick columns of ice in the cold climate.
