Kallefossen is a tall slanting waterfall at the north end of the previously isolated Setesdal Valley (Setesdalen). This waterfall served as a short roadside stop for us to somewhat break up the long drive from Rjukan down to Kristiansand. I didn't try to get a closer look at the falls (than you see pictured on this page) so I'm not sure if there's a path to its base or not. However, we got good enough views from the road anyways.According to our research, the falls lies in a section of Setesdal that is part of the "Discovery Route" (said to be "rediscovered" in the 1950s), which is a tourist loop that encompasses the vertical cliffs of the Ryfylke fjords, the southern end of the Hardanger Plateau (Hardangervidda), and the highlands of Haukelifjell (also an area known for skiing). Directions: From Valle, the falls are a 5km-drive north on Rv9 (or barely 2km south of the Rv45/Rv9 junction). The falls lies to the west side of the state road, and local roads can allow you a closer look at the falls. With hindsight being 20/20, I learned later on that this waterfall happened to be near the tallest one in the valley at 250m called Gloppe Falls (Gloppefossen), requiring a 2km walk after a 1.5km drive on a forestry road branching east off Rv9 just north of the Rv9/Rv45 junction. I certainly wished we had known about it and did it on our June 2005 trip, but you live and learn I guess.
