Kvasfossen (or Kvåsfossen; I think is pronounced "KVOS-foss-un") was the lone waterfall we saw in the Vest-Agder county during our June 2005 trip. We took a short detour off the E39 to get to the falls, which was said to be 36m tall (though I'm not sure if it was really that tall). A distinctive feature about this waterfall was the rock wedged above it. According to the signs here, it was Kvåssteinen, and Norwegian folklore said it was placed there by a big troll. But geologically speaking, it probably tumbled down an adjacent mountainside and got lodged at its current spot. From the car park, we took a short path leading to a bridge above the falls. We walked along the fenced cliff edge before the bridge for awkward angled views of the waterfall (see below). We then crossed the bridge and headed downstream towards an unsigned fenced area with a more direct view of the falls. It was difficult to get a clean photo of the falls as the walls of the ravine tended to block parts of the falls no matter which viewing angle we tried. Directions: From Kristiansand, head west on E39 for 68km towards the town of Lyngdal. Then, head north on Road 43 for about 15km from Lyngdal to the well-signed waterfall.
