Laksforsen

Laksforsen in Nordland, Northern Norway

Laksforsen is a very wide and scenic river waterfall (on the Vefsna River). It was probably the most substantial waterfall we had seen in a while as we did the brutally long drive from Trondheim to Mo I Rana. This falls tumbles some 16m in height, but even then we treated this as a very welcome break as road fatigue had started to set in (those signs here weren't kidding about the E6 being one of the most dangerous highways for this reason alone).

The name of this waterfall was interesting in that they used the word "fors" instead of "foss." I had read that this had more to do with a mix of influences from the indigenous Sami people mixed with Swedish. The front part of the waterfall's name ("laks") means salmon. Apparently, they had built a 270m salmon ladder here (though we didn't pay attention to it), which was the largest one in 1894. And given this name, I guess it wasn't surprising that salmon was once very plentiful here though I'm not sure if that's still the case now.

We noticed that the falls were very popular as the presence of tour buses, the large car park, and the shops would indicate. In addition to being able to see the falls from the car park in a top down manner, we also took a steep and slippery (due to the worn smooth rock surface) descent towards the base of Laksforsen. From this vantage point, we got more direct views of the falls though I thought the top down view was more impressive.

Directions: As mentioned earlier, we came up from Trondheim. We drove north on the E6 for some 354km (236km north of Steinkjer). At that point, we saw a signed turnoff on our left, which then continued for another 200m to the large car park.

The nearest major town to the falls is Mosjøen (I think is pronounced "MOO-shuew-un"). The falls is 27km south of town on the E6 (about 10km north of the tiny township of Trofors). As you're heading south, look for the well-signed turnoff for "Laksforsen" on your right. Take the turnoff and follow it to the large car park.
