Latefossen

Låtefossen

Latefossen (Låtefossen; maybe pronounced like "LOH-teh-foss-un") is perhaps the most popular and dramatic of the waterfalls in Oddadalen (the Odda Valley). The signs here indicated that it tumbles from a height of 165m above, but the thing that definitely got our attention was its dual cascades with high volume giving us a difficult time with lots of mist as we tried hard to keep our camera lens dry while photographing them.

According to our research, the more southern waterfall technically was supposed to have a different name called Skarsfossen. But in any case, I tend to think of the two waterfalls together as Latefossen. Both falls are said to be sourced by Lotevatnet, which in turn is fed by the melting snow from the vast Hardanger Plateau (Hardangervidda; Europe's largest mountain plateau. Therefore, it wasn't surprising to us that this flows year-round.

It was definitely busy at the falls during our visit despite the threatening weather. For they put a little car park area (I can totally see how queues on the road can build up as you wait for a parking spot) as well as a snack bar, but there always seemed to be slow moving vehicles coming by here at any moment in time. So saying this waterfall is popular is definitely not an overstatement.

Directions: The falls are on the southern part of Odda Valley (aka the Valley of Waterfalls) along the Rv13 about 15km south of Odda and 3km north of the E134/Rv13 junction by Skarre. It's about 200m north of Espelandsfossen and roughly 7km south of Vidfoss.
