Ljosurfossen

Ljosurfossen in Geirangerfjorden

Ljosurfossen was the last major waterfall we saw on a Geiranger Fjord (Geirangerfjord) tour on its way towards the Sunnylvs Fjord (Sunnylvsfjorden). Just when we thought the highlights would peak at around
The Seven Sisters, this waterfall and its substantial flow made sure that didn't happen.

We also noticed there was some abandoned farm not too far from its bottom. Such farms, which became quite apparent as we did the fjord cruise, apparently have enough historical and human heritage value that they actually helped the Geranger Fjord attain UNESCO World Heritage status. There was even a story of one of the farmers who lived here never having to pay taxes in his life because when the collector would show up, he'd cut the only rope access to his farm thereby preventing the tax man from access.

We noticed that the falls faced north as it tumbled on the southern walls of the fjord. So during our trip, we had to battle the sun and shadows as we photographed the falls during the midday and early afternoon.

Finally, in keeping with the Norwegian waterfall idiosyncracy of having multiple spellings and names, we've also seen this waterfall referred to as "Ljosurdfossen."

Directions: For directions to the Geirangerfjorden cruise, see our Seven Sisters page.
