Waterfalls of Møre og Romsdal

Looking down Trollstigen towards Isterdalen

Møre og Romsdal features more steep-walled fjords (most famous of which is Geirangerfjorden), valleys with nearly vertical walls (most famous of which is Romsdalen), and one of the most famous sinuous roads in Norway (i.e. Trollstigen). Even with these famous areas, there are others off the beaten path just waiting to be explored. All of these areas have spectacular waterfalls worth visiting.

Geirangerfjorden (which recently gained UNESCO World Heritage Status) is arguably the most scenic fjords in Norway - no small feat considering the quantity of fjords here. In this fjord, there exists several waterfalls such as
The Seven Sisters, Friaren, and Ljosurfossen.

Romsdalen is a spectacular valley that some consider to rival Yosemite Valley in terms of sheer magnitude and waterfalls. Flanked by the tallest overhanging vertical cliff in the country in Trollveggen and the Norwegian Matterhorn called Romsdalshorn, numerous waterfalls line this awesome valley. Among the waterfalls are Vermafossen, Døntefossen, and Gravdefossen. The valley also once featured one of the tallest waterfalls in the world in Mongefossen before hydroelectric developments pretty much cut off its flow.

Trollstigen (translated as the Troll Ladder) is a sinuous road that switches back steeply between the waterfalls Stigfossen and "Trollfossen" (Tverrdalsfossen) at the head of Isterdalen.

In Eikesdalen, you'll find one of the tallest waterfalls in the world in Mardalsfossen. This waterfall flows only during the summer months in a compromise between environmentalists and the power company controlling it.

The county also features some of spectacular off-the-beaten-path waterfalls such as the confluence of three major waterfalls in Åmotan - Reppdalsfossen, Svøufossen, and Linndalsfossen. Further north in the remote Trollheimen Mountains, you'll find the unusual Nauståfossen.
