Rjukandefossen

Rjukandefossen in Hemsedal

Rjukandefossen is a powerful double-waterfall 18m double waterfall near the alpine town of Hemsedal. I believe the name of the falls translates into something like "Smoking Falls" and we have to agree with the connotation there because it certainly was a vigorous waterfall on the raging Mørkedøla with the mist fortunately being blown away from our vantage point. Mørkedøla apparently is the catchment for all the melting snow that typically makes Hemsedal a very popular place for skiing and ice climbing.

From the car park, it was a relatively flat and straightforward 200m (10-minute) walk to get to a place where we can view the falls. The sound of the falls probably made it easier for us to navigate through the rather confusing network of crisscrossing trails. Unfortunately, when we had to hike back to the car park, we didn't have the audible clues from the waterfall getting louder, and so we had a little difficulty getting back. I think with some trial and error, we eventually got back to the car park, but I don't think it was the exact same trail we took in.

Directions: Rjukandefossen is near the town of Tuv, which is 6km west of Hemsedal on Rv52. Look for a somewhat hidden car park near Rjukandefoss Camping alongside Rv52. There is also a white sign nearby the camping place, which can be used as a landmark for finding the nearest car park for the falls.

Since we were coming from Lærdalsøyri, we can say we drove about 87km to get here. Alternatively, I believe Gol would be the closer of the more substantial towns in the area as it would've been 32km away.
