Rovijokfossen

Rovijokfossen

Rovijokfossen (I've also seen it spelled Rovvejokfossen and Ruvijokfossen) was the last waterfall we saw on our July 2005 trip. Also, it could very well be the waterfall that was the closest to Finland that we saw. It's said to tumble 28m beneath the E8 towards the bottom of the canyon where it joins the Skibotn River (the river responsible for the Skibotn Valley or Skibotndalen).

We saw the falls at pretty high flow during our trip, but I've read that its flow diminishes significantly late in the Summer since it's sourced by melting snow.

From the car park (see directions below), we walked towards the stream where a path followed it downhill. As we descended along the stream, we got views of parts of the cascades as they rushed towards the main part of the falls. And after a few more minutes of walking, we reached a small lookout area with a view of the main section though it was hard to photograph it from here.

Beyond this overlook, we continued to descend along the path as it briefly went away from the stream through some vegetation before returning towards the stream at the base of the falls. It was at this spot that we got our most satisfactory views though it was a bit misty down here.

All in all, it took us no more than 10 minutes each way to do the walk.

Directions: Rovijokfossen is right off the E8 about half way between Skibotn and the Finland border (roughly 18km from Skibotn). It was pretty easy to miss the car park for the falls (as we managed to do before doubling back) as the E8 moved pretty fast and the sign for the car park was hard to read from the road.

E8 bridge over the stream responsible for RovijokfossenTo help with finding the car park, it's worth mentioning that there was a bridge on the E8 going over the watercourse responsible for the falls. If you cross that bridge, you went too far.

When we finally managed to find the car park, that was when we were finally able to read the worn, hand-stenciled board with the name of the falls.
