Siseljafossen

Siseljafossen

Siseljafossen tested my determination for visiting it. For what I remembered most about this excursion (besides heavy rain during my visit) was how obscure and tricky it was to even drive to the falls. There were no signs and I had to drive through rough, narrow unpaved road with a scary narrow log bridge to cross. After all these years, I'm still amazed that I even made it!

Fortunately, I was able to see the falls from right within the passenger car I rented. With the heavy rain that bombarded my morning visit, it sure was helpful to not have to go out there and get drenched.

But was it worth it? Well, have a look at the photos on this page and tell me what you think of this two-tiered 175m gusher!

Directions: Siseljafossen is situated in tree-rich Dyrvedalen. The way I did reached the waterfall was as follows.

From Voss, I drove west on E16 for about 6km. There was a turnoff to my right signed for Dyrvedalen. I took that turnoff, then drove about 3km on the main local road (going through a residential area) before turning right at an obscure road leading past a farm and ultimately entering through a couple of cattle guards. Just beyond the last cattle guard, there was a sign and self-help station requesting a toll to use the road (motorbikes 10kr and car or tractor 20kr as of June 2005).

self-help toll stationAfter paying the toll, I proceeded further into the now rough and unpaved road for about another 2km (crossing over a very primitive-looking log bridge at 1.3km) before I was finally able to get a decent view of the waterfall.

Once I was done seeing the falls from the car, the road was too narrow to make any three-point turns to get out so I had to continue driving for another 500m before I finally found someone's driveway (into a farm) to do the 180-degree turn and return the way I came.

It should be noted that the unpaved road I took to get from the residential area to the waterfall was supposedly to be a 4wd road (tractor?) or for dirt bikes or even for just walking. Even still, I was able to make it without too much difficulty (it was mostly nerves and a little luck I think) and without damage to the rental car. It's quite possible that the conditions of this road can easily change into one that would be impassable to low clearance vehicles if it's not maintained (that's why they charge the toll, I reckon).
