Tverrdalsfossen (informally called "Trollfossen") is the other waterfall tumbling alongside the famous serpentine road known as Trollstigen. Apparently, this waterfall is actually taller (300m) and more vertical than the more gradually sloped Stigfossen. However, Stigfossen seemed to get more love (from a publicity standpoint, that is) as we actually had to dig a bit to even find out what the formal name of this waterfall was.Still, we thought this waterfall was no slouch. During our July 2005 trip, it even seemed like this waterfall caused more problems from an engineering standpoint as most of the construction work to re-route the road was to avoid rockslides at the base of this waterfall! To not get confused about which waterfall is which, just keep in mind that as you're facing the climb up Trollstigen, this waterfall tumbles to left of the switchbacks while Stigfossen is mostly to the right of the switchbacks. Directions: See our Stigfossen page for directions on getting to Trollstigen.

Approaching the next switchback with the falls tumbling behind it. Notice that sloping concrete going to the right? That's the next switchback, and it shows you just how steep this road is!
Julie took this photo of the falls while I was busy concentrating on the road
