Vedalsfossen

The main plunge of Vedalsfossen

Vedalsfossen is a very tall waterfall deep in the narrow and steep Hjølmo Valley (Hjølmodalen). It starts of as an attractive double-barreled waterfall plunging off a cliff before cascading to the base of the valley the rest of the way. We were able to see the falls from one of the few pullouts on the road right across the steep valley (so we could never get any closer to the falls).

Even though we didn't need to hike to see this waterfall, I felt driving the unpaved, steep, and very narrow single-lane road to even get to a place where I could see this waterfall was scary enough. We even had to share this confined road with sheep as well as traffic going the other way, and the pullouts on this road were quite limited.

I believe the convention for passing is that whoever's going uphill should be allowed to pass (i.e. the downhill person is supposed to yield). I don't know how well this rule is adhered to. Perhaps sometimes it's just easier for whoever's closest to a pullout to get right to it and let the other person pass.

Directions: For directions, see the Valursfossen page.
