Middle North Falls

Middle North Falls

Middle North Falls took us by surprise as we had expected more dinky waterfalls in the central part of the Trail of Ten Falls within Silver Falls State Park. Instead, this impressive 106ft waterfall dazzled us with its wide square shape as it plunges over an overhang for most of its drop before crashing onto rocks at its base as it cascades a little more before finally calming down further downstream. And speaking of overhang, this is yet another one of those waterfalls you can walk behind.

In fact, there are more overhangs or alcoves beyond the backside of the waterfall where the trail curls around the dropoff at one end of the falls and goes right under these alcoves. From these spots, we got direct views of the falls, and I personally appreciated the shelter from the relentless rain to take whatever photographs we needed upon our visit to this part of Silver Falls State Park.

Profile view of the falls hiding the squarish shape and widthFrom the car park near Winter Falls, we walked roughly 0.7 miles to the Middle North Falls. At the fork beyond the bridge (about 0.3 miles or so), we made a left (going right at the fork leads to Twin Falls). Then when we noticed the loud and crashing waterfall to our left, we followed a spur trail leading closer to the falls.

It was only when we got close to the falls did we realize that the trail continued to go behind the falls before finally ending at the alcove area across the creek with a frontal view of the falls. Back on the main trail (as you head towards Drake Falls), you can get yet another view of the falls by looking back at it with the creek meandering in front.

Directions: The car park where we started the hike to get to this falls is right at the Winter Falls car park and trailhead. See the Winter Falls page for driving directions.
