Starvation Creek Falls

Starvation Creek Falls

Starvation Creek Falls probably doesn't quite get the publicity that other essentially roadside attractions get in the Columbia River Gorge area. Perhaps it's because most visitors don't go far enough east (this one sits between Cascade Locks and Hood River) or they've gotten a serious case of waterfall fatigue on their waterfalling binge. Nonetheless, this very tall waterfall is quite attractive (said to be about 186ft tall), and definitely worth a stop.

There's a short walk to take you closer to the falls in about 1/4-mile from the park. The spur trail leads upstream just before the trail crosses the bridge over Starvation Creek. As you get to the picnic area at the end of the trail, you'll see the tall falls above you, but the views tend to be a bit blocked by some tall trees from this spot.

There's another short spur trail on the other side of the creek after crossing the bridge. This path is a bit narrower and rougher, and I'd say the views are different but not any better than the one described above.

Directions: About 55 miles east of Portlad along I-84 (you'll be between Cascade Locks and Hood River), look for a well-signed exit for the Starvation Creek Rest Area. The off ramp goes right into a large car park area. Only eastbound traffic on I-84 has access to this car park.
