Vaioro Falls

Vaioro Falls trickling in the late dry season

Vaioro Falls is one of two waterfalls (the Afareaitu Waterfalls) on the east side of Moorea Island. We were able to see this waterfall (albeit unsatisfactorily) towards the end of a half-day Circle Island 4wd tour of the island. But since the flow wasn't good this late into the dry season (we were there in September 2002), the driver didn't feel like battling mosquitoes to get a closer look so we were stuck with the view you see in the photo above.

I believe it might be possible to see this waterfall on our own, but I'm not totally sure. Conceivably, we could either self drive towards the Afareaitu township, park somewhere legally, then walk up the bumpy and rocky 4wd road. I'm not sure if we have to find someone to pay if we're going through private property.

This independent approach might also be valid for visiting the other Afareaitu waterfall. However, for now it's all speculation, and I'd very much like to return here earlier in the Dry Season for another go at these waterfalls.

Finally, we were able to see these falls from a lagoon tour that went along the eastern side of Moorea. But given how light-flowing the falls were, they didn't photograph very well.

Technically, I don't know if this waterfall is really called Vaioro or not. I just inferred this from the fact it flows on the Vaioro Stream as opposed to the Putoa Stream.

Directions: Since we did this as part of an organized tour, it's hard to say what the exact directions are. The tours generally pick you up from your resort. I hope one day to return here and provide better directions as well as better photos.
