The Top 10 Best Australia Waterfalls

Blencoe Falls (the 'Survivor' Waterfall)

It's not easy to put together a Top 10 Best Australia Waterfalls List because it's completely subjective and limited to each person's experience with the falls being named.

It was especially difficult for this country as there were simply too many beautiful waterfalls and we had to make some very tough choices. This list is based on our own personal experiences. However, it is by no means a permanent list and it's sure to change as we continue to collect more falls from the land down under. So without further adieu, here they are in reverse order...

10. TIA FALLS
Tia Falls
It was a tight race to pick a 10th waterfall, but this was the one that won out. One of several waterfalls in the Oxley Wild Rivers Gorge area in New South Wales, it's hard not to get jaded or waterfall-fatigued in this area. However, this one has power, height, and the precipitous scenery to back it up.

9. EBOR FALLS
Ebor Falls
Part of the waterfall-laden Waterfalls Way in the New England section of New South Wales, this multi-tiered waterfall is arguably the most scenic of the many you'll find here. The upper section has a two-tiered drop with lots of character while the lower section has a sheer plunge. Put it all together and we have no qualms about including this gem in the regional top 10 list.

8. RUSSELL FALLS
Russell Falls
The curtainy multi-tiered waterfall is perhaps the most popular waterfall in the state of Tasmania. It certainly caught the eye of early visitors since it was also the centerpiece of the first national park in the Island State. With friendly walks amongst giant gum trees and a chance to see wallabies, it's no wonder why this waterfall made our regional top 10 list.

7. MACKENZIE FALLS
Mackenzie Falls
This resilient waterfall of over 30m is currently withstanding some of the harshest drought-ridden conditions in the country. Given the fires that took place in Grampians National Park, the falls is now graced with kangaroo tails growing in the vicinity. Despite all the water problems here, it's easy to forget that is waterfall is still beautiful in its own right despite the miracle that it still flows as well as it does.

6. BLENCOE FALLS
Blencoe Falls
Situated in the Herbert River Gorge deep in the Outback of Queensland, this very remote waterfall was the centerpiece of the reality show "Survivor." And true to its claim to fame, you'll need to earn this one as a high-clearance 4wd vehicle is highly recommended to even get this far into Survivor Country. But once you get here, this unique waterfall, with its 90m plunge and 230m cascade, makes you realize that the effort was well worth it.

5. ELLENBOROUGH FALLS
Ellenborough Falls
This is one of the taller waterfalls in Australia at around 200m, and it's got the scenic vertical backdrop to boot. With many overlooks allowing you to see the falls from several angles plus a viewpoint at its misty base and all connected by a visitor-friendly walk with interpretive signs, this waterfall presents one of the more enjoyable experiences in the country and clearly makes our regional top 10 list.

4. FITZROY FALLS
Fitzroy Falls
This impressive escarpment-leaping 120m waterfall in New South Wales' Morton National Park is a popular attraction. Given its scenic position as it frames a deep and lush valley when viewed from near top as well as its towering size when viewed directly from the Jersey Lookout, this waterfall is well worth the visit, and it makes our top 10 list of Australia Waterfalls.

3. MITCHELL FALLS
Mitchell Falls
Deep in the remote Kimberley Region of Western Australia, this multi-tiered waterfall easily makes our top 10 list. Adding to the gorgeous scene are the deep red cliffs and the fact that nature dominates out in this remote part of the Outback. Adventurers willing to rough it on 4wd or those who can burn a hole in their pockets to do a flight/hike day trip for this waterfall are richly rewarded with an unforgettable experience amongst unforgettable scenery.

2. WALLAMAN FALLS
Wallaman Falls
Located deep in the UNESCO World Heritage Wet Tropics Area, this is Australia's tallest single-drop permanent waterfall at 268m. Viewable from numerous positions across the gorge at the top and from its misty base after a walk through some of the world's oldest rainforest, it's fairly easy to enjoy the falls as well as catching a rainbow or two. Add to this the lush and precipitous gorge scenery of the surrounding area and you have one of the country's must-see attractions. If you're really lucky, you may spot endangered cassowaries, water dragons, and platypus among others here.

1. JIM JIM FALLS
Jim Jim Falls
Plunging off an escarpment in the hot and humid UNESCO wilderness of Kakadu National Park, this waterfall just edged out Wallaman Falls for the top spot. With its 200m plunge amongst colorful cliffs, the falls is indeed an awe-inspiring sight. Even though you'll have to time your visit for the Wet Season or the beginning of the Australian winter (dry season at the Top End), if you couple all the aboriginal history, the scenery, the wildlife, and of course the character of this falls, we couldn't help but consider this one our favorite Australia Waterfall.
